Artificial intelligence is being used to project its all-seeing eye onto the written word with the latest from DeepL free writing app Writes.
Released as a rival to grammaticallythe AI The writing tool can correct spelling and grammatical errors, rephrase words and sentences, and generally make your writing clearer.
Developer DeepL, who first drew attention with its AI-powered technology translation softwarehe said the tool uses “neural network technology that captures the context and nuances of the source text to provide rephrasing suggestions and alternative word choices.”
writing on the wall
Originally as an idea to help its multilingual user base verify the accuracy of their translations, the idea behind Write is to give users control over their writing.
Unlike ChatGPT’s essay-generating content, this AI is effectively an intelligent proofreader, though the company claimed that by coming up with recommended changes to wording, tone, style, and word choice, writers can ” retain their authentic voice” and their creativity.
We gave Write a quick test drive. The interface is clean, with just two text fields and an option to switch languages. British English, American English, and German are supported at launch.
The text is pasted into the left field and the results appear on the right. Suggestions are highlighted in that familiar word processor way. Clicking on these links in the body also offers a few more possibilities.
The speed was excellent: less than a second to verify a single sentence; a few seconds to run your A-eye over a longer piece (although after 2000 characters, you’ll get a prompt to buy DeepL Pro).
However, it is not perfect. Like similar writing and writing enhancement apps, the suggested changes can feel flat, emotionless, process-driven. As with any AI content, human refinement is often necessary and always desirable.
