Statistics also show that there are more single older Britons than ever before, with more than 3 million people living alone after the death or divorce of a partner. Researchers predict that the number of “gray divorces”, or separations without a spouse, will triple by 2030.

The Mail on Sunday, in partnership with Age UK, has brought you a variety of creative and entertaining ways to beat loneliness over the past two weeks.

MoS is praised by readers who join the army of friends on their phones

Age UK extends its sincere thanks to The Mail on Sunday’s generous readers who have volunteered for the charity’s phone friendship service.

We launched a campaign last month to encourage 1,000 readers sign up for the program. The program involves a weekly phone conversation with an older, lonely person. Signups have increased 73 percent in the four days since launch, with 249 subscribers signing up within four business days.

Alasdair Steward, Director of National Services at Age UK, said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the readers for their support.”

“Thanks to Sunday’s call for volunteers by The Mail, we received many applications from readers who are willing to give their time to support the elderly.

“But there is still work to be done. With the holidays approaching and costs continuing to rise, times will become even more difficult for the elderly population.”

Interviews are conducted with recruits and they receive online training before being matched up with an older person. Conversations are conducted by telephone. No contact details are exchanged, only first names are used.
